How many times a dog must be feed daily?

Feeding and giving water in the right schedule are vital for dogs. Feeding too much can result obesity and some other digestion problems in dogs. Dogs’ digestion system is very powerful but domestic dogs’ evolution sends them to a worst digestion system every day. There are various commercial dog foods in market and they are filing the need of dog’s daily nutrition. But also you may prepare some private food because commercial foods tend to make dogs obesity in recent years with additional items in them. How many times a dog must be feed daily?



Scientists and dog specialists say that two times a day is enough for an adult dog. Best schedule is 7:00 a.m. – Breakfast and 6:00 p.m. – Dinner. It’s the perfect recipe for keeping dog’s digestion system stable and strong for illnesses. Also a snack may be a need if dog is active and becoming too hungry till night. It’s very important to get smaller cups while dog is getting older.
If they are puppies, specialists offer three times feeding in a day because they are too active and their digestion system works perfect. If dog is too weak, dog owners mostly prefer to give breakfast in noon. So it changes the schedule. Second food time comes to 6:00 p.m. – Dinner and last comes to 11:00 p.m. Its main aim is leaving dog’s stomach full while it’s sleeping and slowing digestion system.

Also water amount, sleep and activity time schedule is very important on feeding schedule. Especially water refilling schedule is very important. Dog owners mostly use 7:00 a.m. – Clean and fill bowl half-way, Noon – Rinse out and refill half-way, 6:00 p.m. – Rinse and fill half-way and Bedtime – Clean and fill bowl about 1/4 of the way strategy. Dogs always need fresh and clean water because they use minerals in the fresh water in their systems.
Sleeping schedule is also important for setting food schedule. A standard dog sleeps near 16 hours a day. They are not like dogs and mostly they don’t close their eyes while sleeping. It’s easy to understand that a dog is feeding too much because when it happens dogs mostly sleep over 16 hours a day.

Today, it’s accepted that a dog’s food must contain 50% vegetable and 40% meat. Also %10 grain is very important for perfect food. It’s important to know that lots of dog food manufacturers are using tricky way in their package ingredients list. Main trick is using for example chick in the ingredient but using only small and not useful parts of it.
A healthy dog food must contain vitamin E and C, also Omega-3 will be good for dog’s coat. Also in recent years, some companies started to label dog foods with “human-grade”. It means human-grade food facilities are used for food.
Some dog foods are containing high level of corn and cornmeal. Also soy and wheat are mixture to food. Especially corn is very hard to digest for dogs and it can be some allergic.

Dogs can easily digest barley, millet, rolled oats and brown rice. So grain level and grain ingredient of food is very important. If there are fish or similar protein sources in dog’s food schedule more than three times a week, it will be useful to change schedule to three times a day because dogs can digest fish easier than meat or similar.
It’s a traditional ingredient for some dog foods to include animal hood, feet or other organs but some researches showed that these animal parts may change domestic dogs to aggressive ones.
